The Context-Driven School

I guess if I have to identify myself as belonging to some group, it would have to be the Context-Driven School . The ideas behind this group resonate with me because they avoid the dogmatic, the prescribed, the unthinking adherence to a set of predefined

Paul Gerrard wails on Jonathan Kohl

( via James Bach's Blog ) Initial (potentially muddy) thoughts on this: After reading Kohl's original post on post-Agile and his FAQ I have to say that I totally agree with what I think he's saying - consider all practices and use what makes

Debugging Setup Test Automation

I spent about 3 hours today with a couple of other guys trying to figure out what was messing things up with our test automation. There were no visible problems that we could see but after setup was done a bunch of files were missing from the computer.

Morning Post

Well, I seem to be falling into a pattern of missing a post, waking up with that on my mind, and taking time to post before heading in to work. Recently, there was an interesting thread on the Software Testing Yahoo Group titled "Mostly me just ranting

Automated or Manual?

I really like reading Michael Hunter's Blog. His posts are frequently thought-provoking and his latest is no exception. As I mentioned in my previous post though, I'm wary of relying 100% on automation. I'm also wary of relying 100% on manual

CAST 2007

Via Cem Kaner's blog , I just found out about CAST 2007 . This looks like an interesting testing conference and it's local for me. I'll probably attend. Normally, I attend one conference per year and for the past few years it's been the

Missed One

Wow, only the third day of my attempt to post every day and I missed already. Well, aside from the fact of the dog eating my homework, a lot of stuff happened last night (I planned to post in the evenings). Things like: fixing my wife's friend's

Testing - A Big Subject

I thought today that I'd use today's post to describe my idea of what great testing is. As I was sitting here thinking about how to begin, it seemed like Pirsig's writing students in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle maintenance - there's

Testing Object-Oriented Systems - Part 2: Models

The subtitle of Binder's book is "Models, Patterns, and Tools." Part 2 focuses on the "Models" part. Chapter 5 introduces part 2. In it, Binder argues that testing must be model-based. The space that must be examined (tested) for

Software Testing Blogroll

I just started a software testing blogroll (you'll see it over on the left side of this page). Right now it's just the people I can think of off the top of my head. If you know of any interesting blogs related to software testing, let me know

Testing Object-Oriented Systems - Part 1: Preliminaries

Binder's book is large and so I think as I work through it I'll post my thoughts as I finish each part. Here is the post for part 1. Binder starts the book with the classic testing problem of testing a program that produces a triangle. Since his

Robert Binder's Other Book?

I'm finally getting around to reading Robert Binder's book: Testing Object-Oriented Systems . I'm about 100 pages in so far (the book is big - 1248 pages) and so far I think it's a great book. In the book, though, he refers to a book from

Cem Kaner's Blog

In the area of software testing, Cem Kaner is one of my heroes. He is one of the co-authors of one of the most widely read software testing books which is still among the best books on the topic even though Kaner himself admits that it's out of date
